Cross Country Championship 2020

As we have no inter-club cross country races we have devised club cross country challenge. There are 2 routes to choose from, 4.5km and 8.9km. Both start from the entrance to Rowney Wood, with parking opposite the entrance to Carver Barracks airfield. It is a short walk/run to the start.

Run either course or both as many times as you like and times will be posted in the table below.

Download route instructions and maps here, 4.5 km, 8.9 km.  First time participants have found navigation while running to be difficult. You are recommended to walk the course first, with wellies.

4.5km route – Through and close by the woods, with a mix of gravelled roads, grass paths and mud paths. Almost flat, but including some moderate mud hazards. Regular shoes not advised. Trail shoes recommended. Spikes OK for about 80% of route.

8.9km route – Over open fields and field edges, local lanes and through the woods. A mix of gravelled roads, grass paths, mud paths and short sections of tarmac.  Almost flat but including some significant mud hazards. Regular shoes not advised. Trail shoes recommended. Spikes OK for about 80% of route.

Safety

It is possible that you might be in areas that will get no other visitors that day. So if you injure yourself you cannot rely on a passer-by. Please let someone know you are running in the woods and take a mobile phone with you.

We recommend that all runners wear ICE tags (In Case of Emergency) or carry details of emergency contacts in a pocket.

Do not test out the route in regular shoes as flat soles will be dangerous. Even the grassiest areas are very slippy. Be warned that some of the mud zones are very slippy, some are deeper than your ankles and are filled with water, too deep even for for hiking boots.

Please give priority to other members of the public and military. Remember to take any necessary medications, such as an asthma inhaler, with you.
