Edale Mini Mountain Marathon

Gavin Long reports:

What a fantastic event. When the clock starts, you have 3 hours to reach as many checkpoints as possible and get to back to the finish. Arrive back late and you lose points. Generally, the further away the checkpoints, the higher their value.

The terrain was rough and many of the checkpoints were a long way from footpaths, so you had to plot your own route over the moors. It was cold, windy and at times, very misty.

There is lots to think about and I made plenty of errors (route choice, navigational mistakes etc), but you can’t read the map all of the time as you have to keep a watchful eye on the ground – I fell over 4 times.

The fact that I didn’t even reach half of the checkpoints and only covered about 10 miles, means that there is a lot of room of improvement.

I finished 44th out of 111 (8th out of 15 in class) in a time of 2:56:06 (125pts out of a possible 335pts).
