Barns Green Half Marathon

01 November 2009

Paul Waters reports:

This is a very popular race in Sussex, near Horsham. The race is largely on roads, but with some offroad sections on good tracks, the surrounding countryside providing a very attractive gently undulating course.

The race is well established over a number of years, and attracted entries from at least 2000 people. The final number of participants (1361) was no doubt due in part to the appalling weather. Organisation was very good, coping well with large crowds of participants and spectators. They were quickly on the case when the gents urinal block lost its supports at one end, and tipped the occupants (and the obvious) to that end of it!

This was my first half marathon, and it was certainly an experience, the torrential rain and strong winds that lasted until half way through the race providing an extra challenge.

The medals awarded were gold for the first 100, silver for the next 200, and bronze for 301+. I was really pleased to achieve both my aims, to get a sub 1:40 time and a silver medal (is that sad?!).

In summary, this is an attractive and enjoyable, well organised race. Its an hour and a half from here by car, but if you want a change of scene from our regular race list then it is highly recommended.
