Adnams Great East Run 20k

21 February 2010

Stephen Inkley reports:

These were the worst conditions I have ever run in.

The forecast last Friday was 7 degrees and bright sunshine, however I awoke to heavy snow, and arrived at Bungay with the temperature still at zero. Having encountered snow most of the way to the venue, it turned to heavy rain when the race began. After about 12k, the rain turned to sleet, and then finally to snow again by the finish.

As well as being extremely wet and cold, it was also windy on the exposed sections of the route and there were several patches of ice under foot. There were also a few nasty hills and I hate hills.

My time was awful but having picked up a niggle in the Stamford Valentine 30k race the previous week, I was just pleased to grab my goody bag, including a bottle of Adnam's bitter and head for home.

As an aside, I had been told that the Stamford race was not particularly hilly, and that the distance would seem less as the markers were in kilometres, not miles. I was told by a fellow runner after the race that the Stamford route had a total of 22 hills, and as for the distance seeming less - quite the reverse.

Needless to say, on my return home, it was 7 degrees and bright sunshine. Oh well - at least Nottingham Forest won at the weekend!
