England Kilomathon 26.2k

14 March 2010

Stephen Inkley reports:

On Sunday 14th March, I ran the world's first ever Kilomathon, a 26k road race starting at Nottingham University and finishing at Alvaston Park, Derby. The route went via Beeston, Chilwell, Long Eaton, Draycott, Borrowash and Elvaston Castle country park.

It was mainly a flat course with a few gentle undulations. Conditions were very good, and there was an impressive turnout of 5,500 runners and highlights will be shown on Sky Sports on the 26th March.

The organisation was very impressive, and having picked up my bag which had been transported from the start to the finish, I immediately received a text message from the organisers with my time! A local brewery called Falstaff brewery based in Normanton, Derby produced a special Kilomathon beer for the event which was very tasty.

The only negative factor was having to pick up a shuttlebus back to Nottingham outside Pride Park, the home of Forest's fiercest rivals Derby County. As I boarded the bus, I raised my fist and whispered 'you reds', whispered mind you, as perhaps this was a day for building bridges with our noisy neighbours.
